Vocabulary Words #1

FIRST LIST OF HONORS VOCABULARY WORDS

Flourish - to develop and grow in a vigorous way; thrive.

"When the school recieved money to buy instruments, the school's music program flourished."

Guerilla - a member of a band of soldiers that uses irregular war tactics such as suprise raids and sabotaging communications.

"The guerrillas began their assault by ambushing the opposing forces from behind."

Renegade - a person who abandons their particular group or cause for a different one.

"Benedict Arnold is one of today's most popular renegades since he decided to desert the American troops during the Revolutionary War."

Repose - to be at peace; a state of calmness.

"The purpose of meditation is to have the participant be in repose."

Stereotype - an oversimplified general conception associated with members of a specific group
"Peter Griffin is the stereotypical average American middle-aged man."
Symbiosis - a mutual relationship between two different organisms that benefits both of them.

"Flowers and bees have a symbiosis with each other because they help each other flourish in nature."

Tariff - a list of customs or charges imposed by a government.

"During the British rule over the the thirteen colonies, colonists were forced to abide by a tariff and were taxed heavily."

Tempo - the rate or rythym at which an activity is progressing

"After missing the last five attempts at the basket, Justin's tempo was ruined for the rest of the game."

Tranquility - a state of calm or serenity

"While he took his first sip of his warm soup, he felt relaxed and his mind was in tranquility."

Tumult - a noisy commotion caused by a large mob; an uproar.

"When the seniors found out that their privileges were being taken away, the school experienced its first ever tumult."

Tundra - one of the vast treeless plains of the arctic regions of Earth.

"Very few explorers find comfort when traveling through a tundra."

Unanimous - complete agreement

"In the arguement of which console is better, Xbox 360 or Playstation 3, there will never be a unanimous winner."
